Crochet welly boot toppers

crochet welly boot topper animalCrochet welly boot toppers – turn boring wellies into fun wellies in an instant with a fox, owl or monkey topper!

My latest projects have included a set of three animal themed crochet welly boot toppers!  It all started because we were in the park and small Custard spotted another boy wearing some fabulous fox welly boots, he then looked down at his own plain red wellies, and then up at me and asked if he too could have a pair of fox wellies.fox crochet welly boot toppper

Being a second child he of course lives in his sister’s hand-me-downs and this, unfortunately for him, includes a pair of red wellies in every size he might need for the foreseeable future. So rather than spending £19.00 on new fox wellies I thought I would go one better and turn his plain wellies into fox wellies!

So, I sat down inspired by my fox mitten pattern (the pattern is featured in the Ruby & Custard book) and designed some gorgeous crochet welly boot toppers and turned them into foxes. They have cute stand-up ears, shiny button eyes and little white cheeks.  He was thrilled!  I used Paintbox DK Cotton Burnt Orange yarn which is a really lovely bright colour that makes them pop!

Then of course my daughter wanted to be involved and have her own crochet welly boot toppers!  She loves her pink owl hat (the pattern is also featured in the Ruby & Custard book) so I took the fox pattern and adapted it to create owl welly boot toppers!  I used Paintbox DK Cotton Ballet Pink yarn and then to prove they would look just as fabulous in blue I made another set using Duck Egg Blue.

Finally, and because I was on a roll (there is a pun in there somewhere), and I love the rhythm of creating the ribbed crochet cuff I used the crochet monkey hat pattern (also in the Ruby & Custard crochet book) as inspiration for a crochet monkey welly boot topper – I love the way his ears standout and he has such a cheeky little face!

I have written the pattern up into three sizes: small – to fit child boot size 3-6, medium to fit child boot size 7-10 and large to fit child boot size 11-13.  All the patterns have been written up and will be appearing in issue 97, January 2018 of Inside Crochet magazine  (on sale at the end of December and I will update the blog when it is out!)

Hope everyone is keeping up with the pre-Christmas crochet?!   I still need to finish a baby blanket sharpish and make some more silk finger-less gloves…I’d better get hooking!
