Decorate the Soldier’s front

  1. Take one body piece (this will become the front of the jacket) and, using a sewing needle and the metallic yarn, embroider a square using chain stitch around the centre of the belt piece to form the ‘belt buckle’. Fasten off.
  2. Using a sewing needle and the metallic yarn, starting in the base of the soldier’s jacket, working upwards, embroider a line of chain stitches. NB: When you reach the belt, thread the metallic yarn behind it. Fasten off.
  3. Working either side of the centre chain stitch line, and above the belt only, use a sewing needle and metallic yarn to make 6 French knots. Make sure they are evenly spaced on both sides of the central stitch line.

Assemble soldier

  1. Place both body pieces back to back (right sides facing outwards); keep the ‘front’ of the jacket facing towards you when sewing the 2 pieces together. You will be working through both body pieces throughout.
  2. Turn the soldier up-side-down. Using 3.5mm hook, join Black yarn to the top of the trouser leg, underneath the jacket’s bottom edge.
  3. Ch1 (counts as first dc), 9dc evenly along side-edge of the trousers to the base edge. Ch3, join with ss to the first ch (this creates a ‘foot’). 3dc evenly along the base of the legs. Ch3, join with ss to the first ch (this creates the second foot).
  4. 10dc evenly along side-edge of trousers. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Stuff the legs lightly.
  5. With the soldier right-side facing you, start on the right-hand base edge of the jacket. Using 3.5mm hook rejoin Rosso, ch1 (counts as first dc), 1dc in next st, 1ss into the corner of the ‘sleeve’ and the jacket base piece, 2dc in base of sleeve, ch1. 10dc evenly along sleeve edge to the top. 3dc along top edge of coat. 5dc to the halfway along second sleeve.
  6. Lightly stuff body. 5dc to end of sleeve. Ch1, 2dc in base of sleeve edge, 1ss into corner where the sleeve meets the jacket. 2dc along final part of jacket’s edge. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  7. Sew the headpiece onto the body securely.
