Crochet ballerina tutu dress – a glimpse at a very girly summer of crochet!

I may have been quiet recently but I have been busy working on some fabulous patterns that will be available in the near future!  There has been a lot of glitter and wide, envious eyes in my house at a pattern I have written for Simply Crochet magazine; it will appear in issue 63 (out in October 2017).  I was asked to create a crochet bodice and design a way to attach it to a ready-made tutu skirt to create the perfect crochet ballerina tutu dress!

Each dress top uses 1 ball of Rico Essentials DK Cotton yarn, in 100% cotton to create a shell stitch bodice which attaches invisibly to the waistband of a tutu skirt and then fastens at the back with buttons.  My daughter couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the gorgeous pink Rico Essentials tutus arrive!  They are really lovely quality, covered in glitter and have a great, stretchy elasticated waistband!

I chose shell-stitch for the bodice because I particularly wanted to use a stitch that gives the top a bit of structure but also has a bit of flex in it, so shell-stitch seemed perfect.  The bodice also has a lovely contrast colour shell edging at the top and bottom to add a bit of a colour pop! The crochet ballerina tutu dress is finished with grosgrain ribbon shoulder straps that tie in a bow on top of the shoulders to make the dress size really flexible and suitable for a wider age range.

Crochet Ballerina Tutu Dress?

I made one tutu with a pale pink bodice and dark pink skirt and one with a dark pink bodice and pale pink skirt but Rico also have turquoise and cream tutus and the pattern would work with any ready-made tutu skirt – I rather like this multi-coloured one from Claire’s Accessories!

Or you could whip one up in time for Halloween using something like this one, just £5.94, from Party Packs.  And of course Christmas is just around the corner and it could easily be adapted to become a crochet fairy dress or even a crochet angel dress!   If only they made tutus in my size… 🙂

I’ll let you know when the magazine is available to buy so that everyone can get their tutus ready for the party season!
