A crochet love letter is a project I’ve had in my head for ages but just not had the time to do. New Year’s Eve with two small children meant staying at home in front of the fire (and being in bed long before the clock struck midnight!) so this seemed like a great little project to welcome 2014.
I was inspired by the now old fashioned airmail envelopes, that used to be so common – I love the colors cream, red and blue and the whimsical nature really appealed to me. I had so much fun working out how to do the traditional stripey edging and all the embroidery detail of the stamp, address and postmark. Embroidery is not my strong point but I was pleased with how it came out.
I found the little red airplane button in my sewing box – I have no idea where it came from but I suspect I cut it off an item of babies clothing that was destined for the bin! Always good to reuse something!
This crochet love letter is sized to be the UK paper size A5 as it is destined to be a new card for gift wrapped items. Everything sold by Ruby & Custard has the option of free gift wrap and until now I have only had small gift tags available so I plan on this becoming the start of a new card for gift items that will have the space to include longer messages.
When it has fulfilled it’s first purpose I plan to frame it and possibly hang it in my new ‘craft studio’ – a very exciting project I am working on for 2014. But more on that later!
There are some lovely airmail inspired crafts out there but my favorite are these journal downloads from the fabulous Vintage Glam Studio.
I’m working on a mini-version of the crochet love letter as a free pattern now so hope to have something ready to go in the next week or so, in time for people to get ready for Valentines – I know it’s a while away yet but if you making gifts by hand you need to be organized!
I hope you are all having a happy new year
