Crochet pattern writing – a bit like baking?

Crochet pattern writing test

Crochet pattern writing – a bit like writing recipes?  Well I think so!

This week I have been refining some patterns that I wrote over the Summer; these are some little cakes that I came up with while I was on holiday. And although I really liked them, I thought I could improve on them.

Now, I should state that I have never written a recipe (in fact I struggle to even follow them!) but I imagine that the process of writing a recipe is probably very similar to the process of crochet pattern writing. You start with an idea and have a go and then tweak it here and there a little more seasoning/a few more stitches or shaping and so on.

People who are crocheters will probably be more able to spot the difference here; this is a cherry pie. The first version is on the left and the final pattern written version is on the right. Subtle I know but I think the second one is neater and has a much better pie ‘crust’.

I’ve been watching the final of the ‘Great British Bake Off’ this and these little cakes seemed the perfect accompaniment.

Followers of this blog and in particular the Ruby & Custard Facebook page will have noticed that I have been writing lots of new patterns recently and there is a reason….I am really excited to announce that I am working on a book of Ruby & Custard patterns.  It will contain lots of favourites and plenty of new patterns.  I’ll share more as I go but at the moment it’s just so wonderful to be able to share the news!

So watch this space for more news and lots of lovely crochet goodness!
