This is a free crochet pattern to create a cover for a Tunnocks tea cake (or any other brand you might like) in the style of a Christmas pudding!
Materials
- 3mm crochet hook
- 3.5mm crochet hook
- Brown DK yarn
- Cream DK yarn
- Green DK yarn
- Red buttons
Abbreviations
- MR – magic ring
- Ch – chain st
- Htr – half treble
- Tr – treble
- Ss – slip stitch
This pattern is written using UK crochet terminology
Instructions – pudding
- Using cream yarn make MR, ch2 (do not include in St count throughout), make 8htr into ring, pull MR tight and join to top of ch2 with ss (8sts)
- Ch2, 2htr in each st to end, join to top of ch2 with ss (16sts)
- Ch2, 1htr, *2htr, 1htr, 1htr* to end, join to top of ch2 with ss. Cut yarn and join brown yarnFasten off and weave in ends (21sts)
- Using brown yarn, ch2, 1htr, *2htr, 1htr, 1htr, 1htr, 1htr* to end, join to top of ch2 with ss (25sts)
- Ch2, 1htr in every St to end, join to top of ch2 with ss (25sts)
- Repeat step 5 three times. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Instructions – Holly leaf
- Using 3mm hook and green yarn, ch7, skip first st, ss loosely in each st to end (6sts). Fasten off and weave ends.
- In this round you will be working behind ss and into the foundation ch made in step 1.
- Join yarn in first St on right at the base of the leaf stem. Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1tr in next ch, [ch2, ss] in first ch (this creates a small loop which forms the prickle point of the holly leaf), 1 htr, 1dc, 1htr, 1tr, [ch2, ss], [1htr, 1tr, ch2, ss in first ch, 1htr] in top of stem
- Working down opposite side, 1tr, [ch2, ss], 1htr, 1dc, 1htr, 1tr, [ch2, ss], 1htr. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Assembly
Sew leaves to top of pudding and add a couple of red buttons.
