Navy and Grey Stripe Elf Hat

handmade stripe elf hatElf hats are incredibly popular at Christmas but here is proof that they are perfect for the whole year round!

I was recently contacted by someone who had bought two red and white striped elf hats for her boys at Christmas and she loved them so much that she wanted to know if I could make the same hat in navy blue and grey – well of course I can!

I slightly adapted the pattern to make the long tail a little bit shorter – not too much shorter but I wanted the hat to be practical.  Also, I changed the yarn.  The red and white striped elf hats are made using a cotton but I have had lots of problems finding a nice grey cotton since they have discontinued my favorite.  I have found a lovely cuddly grey merino wool mix which works up beautifully and shows really good stitch definition whilst being cosy and warm.  And because it’s a wool mix it will withstand washing – very important for a child’s hat!

The long tail elf hat is of course finished with a really big pom pom which baby Custard was fascinated by!  Here he is modelling the hat before it went off to it’s new home. He spent a long time feeling the texture and stroking it.  He liked it so much that I’ve since made him his own pom pom – as long as they are tied securely and the yarn doesn’t shed it makes a great toy for a very small baby. Here is a good tutorial if you fancy making your own pom pom!

Striped elf hats are £19 including free UK postage and packing and can be made in any combination of colours you fancy!  Email millie@rubyandcustard.com.
